Tamal – On the Square

Where Blue Corn Meets Huntsville’s First Trading Post

Step into the open-air courtyard at 1105 University Avenue, Courthouse Square, and you’ll feel the pull of Huntsville’s earliest days. A historic marker here honors Pleasant Gray’s trading post—our city’s first business, built in 1835–36 beneath a canopy of live oaks and beside an artesian spring. It was a place where settlers and the Bedia tribe met to barter goods and stories, laying the foundations of community we still cherish today.

When we opened our first Tamal on Highway 19, we discovered that people truly embraced our big blue tamales and the way they brought people together. For some time, this corner of the Square sat empty—a blank canvas full of possibilities. I pictured string lights above picnic tables, neighbors chatting over hand-assembled tamales, burritos, street tacos, and refreshing aguas frescas. That vision inspired us to bring our second location right here, adding inviting flavors and welcoming energy to the heart of downtown.

Every item we serve is crafted by hand. Corn husks are spread with masa, fillings are nestled by hand inside each tamal or tortilla, and everything is gently wrapped or rolled before it’s steamed or grilled. Our fresh aguas frescas offer bright, natural flavors that complement every savory bite.

As you settle in beneath the glow of hanging lights, you’re not just enjoying a meal—you’re joining nearly 190 years of Huntsville history. We’re a company founded and run by Huntsville residents, proud to add our chapter to this storied Square.

Just as Pleasant Gray’s cabin grew into a hub of trade and fellowship, we hope Tamal – On the Square will grow with this community—always rooted in shared stories and shared plates. Join us at 1105 University Avenue, where history and great food come together.
